L’Escala makes the perfect base on the Costa Brava from which to explore the extensive network of rural paths far from the main roads and suitable for travel by bicycle.
Taking advantage of these paths and local roads, the District Council has created a cycle touring network whose perfect sign-posting means that the countryside can be fully explored and each of the heritage sites easily located. Most of this network runs across the plain, though there are links by path and road to the coastal zones of the Aro Valley and the Palafrugell corridor. Notable in the south of the district is the rehabilitation as a cycle path of the old railway line which used to run between Sant Feliu de GuĂxols and Girona.
Baix EmpordĂ Cycle network is the first established cycle network in Spain, offering 250km of sign-posted routes allows each cyclist to draw up his/her own route forming connections between the sign-posted paths and roads. across the county.
The cycle touring network is perfectly marked out with signs of its own adapted from other European models. The bicycle pictograph will prove useful in guiding cyclists along the trails that lead to the district’s prettiest spots. There are also information boards at the most interesting spots to provide information about the natural and cultural heritage. At some strategic points there are rest zones equipped with the essential facilities for enjoying a well deserved rest.
Each BTT Centre in Cataluña has been certified by Turisme de Cataluña, and by the Catalan and French Cycling Federations.
