The district’s various mountainous zones have great mountain biking potential. Aware of this, Baix Empordā District Council has created a Mountain Bike Centre which has been officially approved by the Catalan Cycling Federation (FCC) and Turisme de Cataluņa. The Baix Empordā Mountain Bike Centre has 19 connecting routes offering a total of 326 routes and various possibilities in terms of altitude difference and technical difficulty. Mountain bike Centers provide marked off-road routes for mountain-bikers.
There are departure points in several towns around the Gavarres and L’Ardenya hills with routes that can be planned to suit all levels of mountain biking. For example, the Ruta del Carrilet is perfect for long-distance cycling lovers. This 57 km route crosses three regions and twelve towns, following the valleys of Fluvia, Brugent and Ter rivers. The Ruta del Carrilet, or Narrow-Gauge Railway Route, descends smoothly from Olot to Girona. Its highest point is Coll d'en Bas, a pass 558 metres above sea level. The trail, which is suitable for hikers and cyclists alike, is in very good condition, and has been fitted with new bridges, railings and signs. More information: Consell Comarcal del Baix Empordā
