The coast around L´Escala is ideal for snorkelling as there are so many colourful species to see from the surface due to the crystal clear water and the variety of habitats supporting wide variety of sea life - from fish to octopus to corals.
There’s lots to see snorkelling from the shore and you can also take a boat to snorkel at the Medes Islands Marine Reserve or a t secluded bays along the coast.
The most abundant fish to see whilst snorkelling are the shoals of silvery bream, sardines and anchovies, the plentiful damselfish - which are iridescent blue in their juvenile stage - and the territorial wrasse, with the alpha males adopting showy mating colours and fascinating behaviour.
If you know where to find the seagrass meadows you’ll be able to observe a myriad of beautifully coloured fish - battling over mating rights and building algae nests - during the long Catalan summer season.
